Project Overview

Barrington Tops National Park, located in the Upper Hunter region of New South Wales, forms part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area — the most extensive remaining area of subtropical rainforest on earth. The park protects an extraordinary diversity of ancient ecosystems, providing a vital link to Australia’s pre-human natural history while supporting significant recreational use.

The Polblue Swamp Track is a popular walking route within the park, providing visitors with access to sensitive wetland and rainforest landscapes. As visitor numbers increased, National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) identified the need to improve pedestrian access along sections of the track while carefully managing environmental impact within this protected setting.

The d² FRP walkway system was supplied by Dura Composites Australia, who supported with local delivery and technical coordination for the project.

The Engineering Challenge

Existing access along the Polblue Swamp Track comprised a combination of timber walkways and unformed gravel or dirt paths. While functional, these surfaces required ongoing maintenance and were vulnerable to deterioration in wet conditions.

NPWS sought an upgraded solution that would:

  • Improve safety and accessibility for park visitors
  • Minimise environmental disturbance during construction
  • Be lightweight and suitable for areas with limited access
  • Offer a long service life with low ongoing maintenance requirements

Given the sensitive rainforest and swamp environment, traditional heavy construction methods were unsuitable. Any intervention needed to balance visitor safety with long-term protection of the surrounding ecosystem.

A Low-Impact Walkway Solution for a Sensitive Environment

Working on behalf of NPWS, Wild Koala selected the d² Dura 30mm Mini Mesh FRP walkway system, supplied by Dura Composites Australia, to deliver a durable, low-impact access solution through the Polblue Swamp area.

The FRP walkway system was supplied in dark grey grit, with wide flange beam cross members and C-channel framework, all cut to specification to suit site conditions. The modular design simplified the overall layout compared to competitor offerings, providing an overall cost saving while reducing on-site complexity.

Key advantages of the d² solution included:

  • Lightweight components suited to manual handling in remote locations
  • Rapid installation with minimal ground disturbance
  • Long service life and low maintenance requirements
  • Improved safety through consistent, slip-resistant walking surfaces

Installation in a World Heritage Setting

Installation was carried out by Wild Koala, a specialist contractor experienced in environmental and landscape works. The lightweight nature of the FRP components reduced the need for heavy machinery, supporting a low-impact installation approach aligned with NPWS environmental objectives.

By simplifying the construction process and reducing material handling, the project team delivered improved access while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding rainforest and wetland environment.

Measurable Carbon and Environmental Benefits

In addition to safety and constructability benefits, the use of d² FRP walkways delivered a measured embodied carbon saving of 2,109 kg COe compared to competitor solutions.

This saving is equivalent to:

  • 16,162 km driven in a diesel vehicle
  • 10 economy flights from Sydney to Perth
  • 96 mature trees sequestering carbon over one year

These outcomes support NPWS objectives to minimise environmental impact while delivering resilient visitor infrastructure within protected landscapes.
